After several years of beach-bumming in Boracay, Joey and I decided to open the Red Pirates pub in Angol, at the southern end of White Beach. We made the decision to open our own bar mostly because we wanted to create a laid back place to hang out with our friends, away from the crowds and chaos.
Previously we used to spend a lot of time around the area of Bom Bom Bar/Real Coffee, but in recent years (since the mall development), that area has become noisy and crowded, and we decided to move to Angol for some peace and quiet.
We named the bar after our paraw (native sailing boat), which is a well known sight around Boracay. It seemed a good idea to stick with this name as it was already so popular. Since opening on the 1st of August last year, we have tried to make the place as different as possible from other bars on White Beach. As well as the pirates theme, we also shy away from playing the ubiquitous R'n'B music that seems to blare out of almost every other bar on the island. As well as Joey's favourite reggae music, you can often hear Filipino, Latino, African and Indian sounds, among others. Occasionally our friends will treat us to a display of live tribal music, with bongo drums, rain sticks etc. Sunset time (around 6pm) is chill-out time, and you can usually find us outside on the beach, watching the scene with friends.
We wanted to create a friendly place, where people can meet, chat, play music and trade stories. So far the plan seems to be working....
